We recently spent the day at Sun World Ba Na Hills near Da Nang, and I have a lot to say about it. Some parts were incredible, some parts were chaotic, and some parts were so magical that I’m still thinking about them days later. If you’re wondering whether Ba Na Hills is worth visiting, here’s exactly how our day went and what I’d do differently next time.
Getting There: Why We Chose a Tour Group
We booked a tour, and honestly, it made the morning so easy. A bus picked us up from our hotel at around 7:30 in the morning. Our guide spoke English really well, and he kept us entertained the entire one‑hour drive. He talked about everything from Vietnamese coffee to the history of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, and Ba Na Hills itself.
He told us about salt coffee. He hyped it up so much that I had to try it later. Spoiler: it is incredible. So good that I’m convinced it’s worth flying to Vietnam just to drink it.
He also explained how Ba Na Hills started as a French hill station in 1919. The French built it as a cool escape from the heat, but the original buildings were destroyed during the wars. Sun Group rebuilt the entire area into the fantasy‑style theme park it is today.
Cable Car and WOWPass
We arrived around 9:00am. Our guide bought our tickets and recommended the WOWPass. It cost an extra 300,000 VND each, and it let us skip the cable car line. The regular wait was about twenty minutes (sometimes longer), and when you only have a limited amount of time, skipping that line is worth it.
The cable car ride itself is beautiful. Ba Na Hills has several world records for its cable car system, and you float over mountains and clouds. Afternoon storms can shut the cable cars down, which creates huge lines when they reopen. The WOWPass helps you avoid that problem. If you’re anything like us and you don’t like waiting in lines, it’s worth it.

The Golden Bridge
Our first stop was the famous Golden Bridge. It is impressive, and the design is unique. The giant stone hands holding the bridge look surreal in person. The crowds, however, were overwhelming. You could hardly walk across it. I thought the bridge was cool, but I also think it is very hyped. There are many other places in Vietnam that are just as beautiful and far less crowded.
Debay Wine Cellar
Next, we walked into the Debay Wine Cellar. It was built by the French in 1923 and carved into the mountain rock to keep the temperature cool. I love red wine, so of course I paid the extra 200,000 VND to tour it and get a glass. The cellar was atmospheric and interesting, and my wine was really nice. I thought it was worth it, more so than the Golden Bridge.

Le Jardin D’Amour Flower Gardens
Further down from the bridge, we explored the flower gardens. The area is called Le Jardin D’Amour, and it includes nine themed gardens. It was peaceful and colorful, and a lovely place to wander.
Fantasy Park and the Alpine Coaster
We met back up with our guide and took another cable car to the main theme park area, which is called Fantasy Park. It is the largest indoor amusement park in Vietnam and has plenty of games and rides.
We bought tickets for the Alpine Coaster. It cost 250,000 VND for access to three coaster‑style rides. The kids loved them, and they were fun, but if you are on a tight budget, you can skip them. Many rides are already included in your main ticket.

The International Buffet
We went to the international buffet for lunch because it was included with our ticket. The food selection was huge. Vietnamese dishes, BBQ, seafood, salads, desserts, and pretty much anything you could think of. There was genuinely something for everyone.
The problem was the crowd. It was packed, and we spent about twenty minutes trying to find a table. Getting food felt almost uncivilized. People were pushing in, and there was no order at all. I’m not sure if we just arrived at a peak time or if it is always like that, but it was not enjoyable.
After looking into it later, we realised we would have skipped the buffet if we had known you could buy a standard entry ticket that does not include lunch. There were so many other food options around the park. Hotdogs, bánh mì, noodles, bakeries, and small restaurants. We would have preferred to grab something quick and spend more time exploring, because the buffet ended up chewing through a lot of our limited time.
If you are a big eater and you enjoy trying lots of different foods, the buffet might be worth it. For us, it took up too much time, and we would choose the standard entry ticket next time and eat elsewhere in the park.
Exploring the Park After 3 PM
Ba Na Hills is huge. There is the French Village, Moon Castle, Eclipse Square, spiritual areas, gardens, rides, and themed zones. With having only one day, and not sure if we will ever have the opportunity to come back again, we decided not to return with our tour group at 3 PM. Instead, we stayed longer and planned to catch a Grab (taxi) home. That turned out to be the best decision of the day.
After 3 PM, the crowds dropped noticeably. I don’t know if that’s when most tour groups leave, but it felt like a different place. We walked around the French Village and enjoyed the architecture. The kids went on more rides, and there were no lines at all. Around 6 PM, the mist rolled in, and we were literally walking through clouds. It felt magical.
We left after 7 PM. We were worried about getting back to our hotel, but there were plenty of taxis and Grabs waiting outside. It was very easy.
Tour vs. DIY
We do not regret booking a tour. It was more expensive, and yes, we could have made the day cheaper by taking a Grab and buying our own tickets. But having a guide who knew the layout and gave helpful tips was worth it. The park is huge, and having someone show us around early in the day made everything easier. Once we understood where things were, we were fine on our own.
So, Is Ba Na Hills Worth It?
Yes, but with the right expectations.
Worth it if you enjoy:
- Beautiful views
- Unique architecture
- Gardens and themed areas
- Rides and attractions
- Staying later in the day when the crowds disappear
- Cool mountain weather and misty evenings
Not worth it if you dislike:
- Crowds
- Busy buffets
- Overly touristy attractions
- Rushing through a large park in a short time
Our best moments were after 3 PM. If you plan your day well, Ba Na Hills can be a wonderful experience. If you go, consider the WOWPass, maybe skip the buffet, and stay later in the afternoon. And definitely try the salt coffee!
